Payment gateways
Payment Gateway is a service for fast and secure processing of electronic transactions, an online analogue of the payment terminal used in retail outlets. Authorizes payments and provides contact between the seller, buyer and bank.
Payment Gateways are software applications designed specifically for electronic commerce. However, thanks to the tools they provide for fast and accurate activation of payments, they are also used in traditional business. Security of information exchange through a payment gateway is achieved by encrypting personal data (such as credit card number, secret code, etc.) using SSL (Secure Socket Layer). Many hosting companies include payment gateways in their standard client packages.
To buy goods through a payment gateway, the customer must have an account in the appropriate system. But once he has registered, he selects the payment gateway payment method and enters password - card data is transferred automatically. Some online stores offer their customers two alternative methods of payment for goods: through a gateway or by a bank card. If a seller does not have the tools to process plastic cards independently, it uses only the payment gateway (for example, that's how almost all transactions at eBay auctions are made). For the buyer, the use of the payment gateway is free, the seller pays interest on the transactions.

How the payment gateway works
To use payment gateways, you need an Internet connection.
- Buyer makes a transaction through a website or physically.
- Data are sent to the payment gateway, which receives the information and then transmits the details of the transaction to the bank that issued the card with which the purchase was made.
- The bank sends the request to the payment system (VISA, Mastercard, etc.). The conformity of the transaction terms and the client's credit situation is assessed.
- The issuing bank sends the authorization code, which "gives the green light" to the payment system for the transaction.
- The payment system sends the authorization code to the payment gateway, from where it comes to the seller.
- If the transaction is approved, the sale passes and the money is withdrawn from the customer's account.
The whole process takes several seconds. The speed depends on the quality of the Internet connection. In reality, the seller gets the client's money after about 3 days.
